By the Numbers

Final Diagnosis

A part of the lab report that I received breaks down the findings as follows based on what was resected during the surgery. Basically an inventory of what was removed and what each component revealed in the lab dissections:

A. Thyroid, right, hemithyroidectomy:
-Papillary thyroid carcinoma, "micro" papillary varian (3 mm and .3 mm)
-Surgical resection margin negative, less than 1 mm to anterior
-Negative parathyroid sampling
-Negative for lymph node sampling

B. Mediastinum, right, mass, simple soft tissue resection:
-Papillary thyroid carcinoma (3 mm) in association with lymphoepithelial cyst
-3 lymph nodes negative for metastatic thyroid carcinoma, 0/3
-Ectopic thyroid tissue, negative for significant atypia or malignancy
-Parathyroid gland, negative for significant atypia, or malignancy
-Cholesterol granuloma, negative for significant atypia or malignancy

C. Thyroid, left, hemithyroidectomy:
-Thyroid parenchyma negative or significant atypia or carcinoma
-Negative for parathyroid sampling

D. Lymph nodes, central mediastinum, regional lymph node resection:
-12 lymph nodes negative for metastatic carcinoma, 0/12
-Unremarkable parathyroid gland

If you were keeping track that comes out to:
1 x total thyroid removal with smatterings of cancer throughout the right lobe
15 x lymph nodes - all negative for any cancer
1 x mass, about the size of a golf ball, with cancer
